Heel Pain

What are some causes of heel pain?

The number one cause of heel pain is a condition called plantar fasciitis. It is often characterized by pain on the bottom of the heel when you take your first steps in the morning, but can also last all day long-with pain often progressing the longer the condition remains untreated. In addition, other common causes of heel pain include tendinitis, stress fractures, neuritis, bursitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and at pad thinning.

What can cause Plantar Fasciitis specifically?

Plantar fasciitis can be caused by a number of factors, including weight gain, worn-out shoes, walking barefoot, increasing exercise, and walking on hard surfaces without proper support. Any of these factors, in combination with how your feet function mechanically, can cause plantar fasciitis.

Bunions & Hammertoes

A bunion is when your big toe points toward the second toe. This causes a bump on the outside edge of your toe. To help prevent bunions from forming, avoid compressing the toes of your foot with narrow, poor-fitting shoes. More than 100 different surgical techniques have been prescribed to treat this condition.

Hammertoe is a deformity of the toe, in which the end of the toe is bent downward. Hammertoe usually affects the second toe, however, it may also affect the other toes. The toe moves into a claw-like position.

The most common cause of hammertoe is wearing short, narrow shoes that are too tight. The toe is forced into a bent position and muscles and tendons in the toe tighten and become shorter. Mild hammertoe in children can be treated by manipulating and splinting the affected toe. A foot doctor can also make foot devices called hammertoe regulators or straighteners for you, or you can buy them at the store. For severe hammertoe, you will need an operation to straighten the joint.

Fungus Nails

Fungal nail infections are an infection of the nails by a fungus. Fungal nail infections are most often seen in adults and often follow fungal infection of the feet. In addition, toenails are affected more often than fingernails.
People who often go to public swimming pools, gyms, or shower rooms, and people who sweat a great deal, often have mold-like infections as the fungi that cause them thrive in warm, moist areas.

Over-the-counter creams and ointments generally do not help treat this condition, therefore prescription anti-fungal medicines taken by mouth are often used to help clear the fungus.

Causes

The body normally hosts a variety of bacteria and fungi. Some of these are useful to the body while others may multiply quickly and form infections. Fungi can live on the dead tissues of the hair, nails, and outer skin layers.

Fungal Infections Include Mold-Like Fungi That Cause:
  • Athlete's Foot
  • Jock Itch
  • Ringworm on the Skin of the Body or Head

Ingrown Nails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows down and into the skin of the toe. There may be pain, redness, and swelling around the nail. Treatment will generally control the infection and relieve pain. However, the condition is likely to return if measures to prevent it are not taken.

Good foot care is important to prevent recurrence. This condition may become serious in people with diabetes, poor circulation, and nerve problems.
